GLMC Rider of the Year

Current Standings Link

The GLMC Rider of the Year (ROTY) points chase is designed to reward performance and participation in GLMC events. From timed road enduros to road rallies, the GLMC event calendar offers a variety of riding unmatched by any other organization in the US. Points are awarded at each event based on riders finishing rank or their volunteer efforts. Winner of the Rider of the Year title gets their name permanently engraved on the coveted Piston Cup traveling trophy. They then also hold the "Rider Number 1" title for the following riding season. The winner also can participate in all the following year's GLMC events free.

The first GLMC event of the year is the Popcycle Derby. This is a short timed road enduro held in February or March. It is run on public streets and roads. Each participant starts a minute apart and then follows a series of directions on a route card to the next check point. At each check point the riders are given the next route card. The idea is to arrive at each check point within a 1 minute window. There are normally 1 or 2 check points before a lunch check point. Lunch is provided and allows riders to warmup, commiserate, and then get ready for the final 1 or 2 check points. The event a great way to get out and shake off the winter blues.

The Annual Grand Tour runs from April to September. This event sends riders to towns, parks and other locations related to an annual theme. From tiny towns to big cities, the GLMC Grand Tour is always a good reason to just get out and ride. This is a 50 point event. See the Grand Tour home page for more information.

Each year on Memorial Day Weekend is the 10-12 hour 55 point Bonzai Road Rally. The Bonzai is the GLMCs longest running event and sends riders out on the roads of Eastern MN and Western WI. See the Bonzai home page for more details and entry form.

Next is the Buffalo Run Road Rally on Sunday of Labor Day Weekend each year. The Buffalo Run celebrates the wide open spaces of the prairie. The Buffalo Run is a 10-12 hour road rally. In 2017 this rally will start and end in North Sioux City, SD.

The GLMC riding season then finishes up in early October with the Harvest Road Rally. This 10-12 hour road rally gives riders a chance to enjoy the beautiful Fall colors of Minnesota.

Starting in 2017 there are some big ROTY changes. If you complete all 5 events, you can throw out the points your lowest scored event. That includes an event which your schedule didn't allow. Another change is the Off Road Poker Run is not part of the ROTY points chase any more. The events listed above are each worth upto 50 points. Points will be based on your place in the Rally. There are also up five points awarded for efficiency during each Road Rally. Use your four best ROTY events to maximumize your score.

After all the events are over, the Rider of the Year points are totaled up and the fabulous Piston Cup is award at a final awards get together. See you all at the final meeting.

2019 will be the last year of the ROTY Challenge. The winner in 2018 will keep the Piston Cup permanantly.
